Welcome to Furman University, MXP 175: Why We Swim 2014.
Why do we swim? Most mammals instinctively know how to swim, but humans do not. Many people fear the water. And yet swimmers repeatedly talk–and write–about the joys of swimming, its physical and mental benefits.
This course explores swimming from a variety of perspectives: literary, psychological, and cultural. We will make connections between what we are learning in the course readings and field trips and what we are experiencing in the water ourselves.
Additional material, including course readings, policies, and syllabus, are available on our course Moodle page (access limited to students enrolled in the course; requires login).
