St. Augustine Wade-In Demonstration

St. Augustine Wade-In Demonstration

This is an example of a beach riot I found in St. Augustine which is about an hour from my house. It was one of the worst demonstrations of it’s kind, and it happened on June 25, 1964. Because of these terrible summer riots St. Augustine got the name “Florida’s Birmingham.” There’s a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. where he calls St. Augustine “the most segregated city in America” at the time. This reminded me of a lot of the examples we read about in last nights reading. Like Dr. Menzer said in class, I think it’s completely shocking that there were such things as “segregated beaches.”
